As QUEERGURU is based in Provincetown at the very tip of Cape Cod as we always do, it seems we failed to notice that love is in the air. And young love at that. It’s the story of two boys fresh out of graduating high school, both looking for a sign, a hint, a spark, anything to tell them what comes next. Ely (Benjamin Piers) is a very sensitive artist who is fresh out of mental health treatment and is crashing with his oldest friend, Rowen (Alison Newton), when they bump into their classmate Yona (Sean Manucha). He has literally ‘come out’ and is now working at his dad’s auto shop but he spends his time dreaming of leaving town
Rowen is one of those female friends every gay man should have, as it is she who not only senses an attraction between the two men, but she sets up plans for them to hang out together. Nott a date exactly but when they eventually feel comfortable enough, they let down their walls, and discover they are both on the same page.
Written and directed by Josh Cox, a queer Brooklyn-based American filmmaker originally from Cape Cod, hence the setting is such an integral part of this story of young love. He had originally planned this as a movie but in the middle of filming, he was inspired to divide Ely and Yona’s story up into six short episodes, each roughly 10 minutes long. Cox proves he not only knows his way around New England’s beaches but also about how young love operates. And if you liked Heartstopper, you will so love this. After all, summer is for lovers
