Queer Walks Aound The Globe 1 : Dublin, Paris, New York and London

Panti Bar DUBLIN (the ‘home’ of Panti Bliss)

My husband is insisting that ONE of my New Year’s resolutions this year is to go on more walks.  So we are going to compromise, and I promised I will as long as they are gay …..AND in a foreign city.  Like Dublin (one of our very favorite European capitals)

They have a walking tour called The Secret History of Queer Dublin, which is all about seeing the city in a new light. Some of the most central figures in Dublin’s political and cultural history were gay: some were heroes, others were villains.  Gay people, as artists, activists, politicians and revolutionaries, have played crucial roles in shaping Ireland’s history for better and worse, and this tour is about their stories and the story of a rebellious and scandalous city.

The tour starts at the Oscar Wilde statue at Merrion Square and ends at Dublin Castle. Your guide will take you through various chapters of the gay movement in Dublin, discussing the fight for equal rights and equality.  The. next Tour is January 10th  BUT they have numerous dates throughout the year .  Check out Alternative Dublin

Paris, offers several different queer Walking Tours, but our personal favorite is the one in Le Marais. This is the historic district which spreads across parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements on the Rive Droite, or Right Bank, of the Seine. Having once been an aristocratic district, it is home to many buildings of historic and architectural importance. It lost its status as a fashionable district in the late 18th century, with only minor nobles calling the area home. After the French Revolution, the district fell into disrepair and was abandoned by the nobility. After a long period of decay, the district has transformed   in recent years (you know those Gays get EVERYWHERE) and is now once again amongst the more fashionable areas of Paris, known for its art galleries, upscale restaurants and museums.   Before you go you can check out https://mymarais.paris/en/

NEW YORK has such a wealth of queer history, and this is one tour we can never get enough of. You get to hear about the Stonewall Uprising at the very place it happened and learn how the monumental event has shaped the lives of LGBTQ+ people in New York City, the US, and beyond. The walk includes (the outsides!) of so many local bars of historical importance and the very knowledgeable local guides tell you all about NYC’s legendary Pride March.  Read more about – Pride Tours NYC’s LGBTQ Historical Walking Tour

However, when it comes to London, one of Queerguru’s home bases, we have opted for a more theatrical queer walk which sort of takes you around in circles.  There is a special Pride Guided Tour of the legendary Globe Theatre, bringing to life the queer stories and characters from Shakespeare’s life and times. You get to learn about what life would have been like for the queer community during Shakespeare’s lifetime? And how exactly are they linked to the theatre?

The Guide takes you on a deep dive into an important era in LGBTQ+ history, from rebellious icons down in the yard to nobility in the galleries, and even the intimate letters between King James I and his ‘favourite’ the Duke of Buckingham.  Plus, you get to discover vivid records of diverse sexualities and gender identities in the writing of the time, including Shakespeare’s own Sonnets, and explore the queer relationships between characters in some of his most famous plays.
