One of the (many) reasons that Queerguru loves its summer base in Provincetown, is its genuine sense of support for its own. One of them who really needs that now is Thirsty Burlington (aka Scott Townsend) who is Drag Royalty in this queer mecca on the tip of Cape Cod.
Since 1991 Thirsty has been wowing crowds all summer long belting out her powerhouse voice of one of the many divas she becomes in front of her eyes. She is the best ‘Cher” we have ever seen (apart from Randy Roberts naturally). But you do not need to take our word for it, Academy Award Nominee Bob Mackie who was Cher’s designer for years said” she was more Cher and Cher.”
Queerguru got to know Thirsty on the eve of the premiere of THIRSTY a biopic of Scott/Thirsty’s own story that has been made into a fascinating feature film It showed us that behind all that glamour and the sequins. there is this tale of a tough childhood struggle that looked like it might spiral out of control until Scott became Thirsty and found his own gender fluidity.
We got to sit down and talk with the star of this compelling and sometimes heartbreaking story in the movie. It was the same night that Queerguru joined the crowd of her fans that night and fell in love with both the Drag queen and the actor.
Nowadays that love has also turned to sheer admiration, as Scott the man is battling some hellish cancers. Whenever we read his updates of their ups (but more often down) we can still sense the sheer determination …… and love of life …..in every single post. Each difficult step that may make things worse, is relayed to us in a spirit that I know none of us would ever be able to achieve.
The toll of the years has not only been tough physically but also financially and this is where we have a perfect time where we can start to pay back Thirsty for all those wonderfully joyous nights she entertained. On Saturday 10th Feb Provincetown’s Gifford House is hosting THIRSTY THROUGH THE YEARS: an iconic and inclusive fashion benefit. It is your chance to have a fab evening but its also your chance to pick up some of Thirsty’s style!
All night long they will be auctioning off fabulous evening attire and evening gowns (that the ‘real’ Cher would die for) plus Incredibly outrageous hairdresses and headpieces and of course gems for Thirsty’s extravagant jewelry of the finest quality . There is even some fur coats)
If like Queerguru you want to pick something to hang on the way then get there early. By the way, they have chosen 17 different models of all shapes and sizes for this show, so there is no excuse for claiming that nothing will fit. Anyway as always, Thirsty has an answer for that Just don’t zip up the back and walk in sideways at your next soirée.
PLEASE SUPPORT THIS CREATIVE EVENT BECAUSE WE NEED TO PAY BACK SCOTT/THIRSTY FOR ALL THEY HAVE GIVEN THE TOWN
February 10th Feb: doors open 7pm GIFFORD HOUSE HOTEL
