It may be almost 20 years since the wonderful eccentric televangelist Tammy Faye Baker left this earth …… but we still want to worship her glamorous persona.
During her career, she was noted for her larger-than-life style and her two (crappy preacher husbands). However, this wasn’t why she was universally worshipped as a gay icon but it was particularly for her advocacy for the LGBT community and also reaching out to HIV/AIDS patients at the height of the AIDS epidemic.
In 2010 married filmmaker couple Fenton Bailey Randy Barbato with 5 Primetime Emmy Awards under their belt, gave us their affectionate portrait THE EYES of TAMMY FAYE BAKER. Then in 2022, they adapted the script into a feature film which won 2 Academy Awards including one for Jessica Chastain for Best Actress.
The very next year TAMMY FAYE The Musical had its world premiere at London in Fall 2022, where it was nominated for four Olivier Awards including Best Musical. Written by Elton John–Jake Shears–James Graham it has just been announced that it will premiere on Broadway during the 2024-25 Season. The musical will be staged at an as-yet-unannounced Nederlander Theatre. Venue, production dates and casting will be announced at a later date.
