My Hollywood Pride : the first Pride of the Year : together we are stronger against our anti-gay Governor

This weekend sees My Hollywood Pride (that’s Hollywood Florida not the star-studded city  in California).  Its  the first Pride anywhere in the world each year, and they  have chosen the theme “Pride Starts Here!”   It takes an even more important status as the State’s rampantly homophobic Governor has slunk back home after his rather pathetic campaign to be the next President.

Under his Administration, Florida has become a leader in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, and as a result LGBTQ+ people, especially the youth, are the target of unfair and unequal treatment. LGBTQ+ people have long created their own chosen families in the face of adversity and marginalization. With that in mind, Pride organizers are inviting everyone to join them to remind everyone that we are stronger together.

The weekend is packed with different events (check out the whole program HERE) but what we are focusing at Queerguru on is the mini Film Fest that Outshine is celebrating called  Pride at Cinema Paradiso. It consists of  screening 4 fab queer films FREE

1.00 pm BEYOND THE AGGRESSIVES : 25 YEARS LATER revisiting aspirations of a group of six fabulous aggressives, masculine presenting/identifying queer people of color. (see Queerguru’s full review HERE )

3:30 pm  Open Dialogues: Gen QueerZ
The fourth film in the Open Dialogues series, Gen QueerZ gives voice to college and university students who are among the first generation to be “out” while attending high school and living at home. Their stories reflect a diversity of gender identities, cultural backgrounds, and academic studies while exploring allyship, threats, and the dynamics of being out at home with family.

5:00 pm: Unity presents  The CAŌBA ARCHIVES which are the Unity Coalition’s Video documentation   of Extraordinary same-gender Men of Color

7 .PM Big Easy Queens Set in the steamy, spooky underworld of New Orleans, Big Easy Queens is 80 minutes of pure queer horror with original musical numbers, voodoo, zombies, drag queens, and campy neo-giallo delight soaked in blood, gristle, and glitter, oh my. In this righteous “glam horror” extravaganza, Big Easy Queens follows Minnie Bouvèé, Mob Queen of the Quarter, and her rivalry with her arch-nemesis, Poodles Makenzie. After Minnie Bouvèé has Poodles Makenzie’s crew brutally slaughtered, she braces for the blowback; what she doesn’t expect, however, is to be stalked by a creepy masked figure who leaves behind bouquets of gardenias and terrifying notes. Is this Poodles’ revenge, or the work of Minnie’s estranged sister who stole her man years ago and has suddenly reappeared in her life
