One of the many reasons that Provincetown, at the very tip of Cape Cod, is such a magical place is the stars that make it shine so brightly. And not just the ones in the sky.  

Next summer it will be sadly a little dimmer, as one of the town’s most celebrated visitors has just died. Nine time Primetime Emmy Awards designer (plus a Tony Award, and three nominations for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design)  BOB MACKIE has just passed at the age of 87.

He has made his annual visit to Provincetown to see his dear friend, the jazz singer Marilyn Maye perform for so many years… she still does her shows here even though she has reached the sprightly age of 98! 

The first time I spied Bob in her audience was in 2015, and totally out of character for me (!)  I approached him before the show started.  To my utter surprise and sheer delight, he agreed to film an impromptu interview the moment the show finished 

This would be the first of several times over the next few years he would agree to sit down with me and muse about his extraordinary life.   He was not just a remarkably talented designer but the most generous of men who welcomed my crew and me so warmly and was so very generous with his time. Bob was old-school and such a gentleman who would make a point of ensuring that each of our meetings ….. as brief as they may be…..were a sheer joy.

It was both a pleasure and honor to have been able to spend this time with him.  RIP
