Men and Balls and Movies

pass

There is not one but two excellent LGBT movies that are rooted in sport that are playing the Film Festival circuit right now and are destined to be released on VOD/DVD very soon.

The Brit film The Pass was originally a play that ran at the Royal Court Theater some years ago. Starring out-gay actor Russell Tovey who gives a a career best performance as Jason a closeted footballer who is leading a life of denial at the expense of his former bond with plucky wannabe Ade (Arinze Kene). However the night before the game of their life, everything changes.

Brit heartthrob Tovey (recently seeing in Looking) originated the role on stage, and if you may recall more recently went shirtless when playing in ‘A View From The Bridge ‘ on Broadway causing a man in the audience to faint.

Scrum is an Australian documentary about gay rugby’s 7th Annual Bingham Cup in Sydney . It follows three determined gay athletes vying for a spot on the elite Sydney Convicts team: Aki, the Japanese outsider who worked tirelessly for two years so he could travel to Sydney; Brennan, a hunky Canadian jock who was built for contact sports but rejected by his former, straight teammates after they discovered he was gay; and Pearse, the Irish backpacker bullied in school, tired of being continually put down.

It’s a heartwarming wee movie that is a story about diversity and inclusion which by the time the final credits you are in love with both the players and even the game.
