Back in 2018, when Matthew López’s drama THE INHERITANCE had its world premiere in London, the august conservative newspaper, The Telegraph, hardly known for its hyperbolic headlines, declared it “the most important American play of the century.
Set in New York three decades after the height of the AIDS epidemic, The Inheritance wrestles with what it means to be a gay man today, exploring relationships and connections across age and social class and asking what one generation’s responsibilities may be to the next. The play is a loose adaptation of E.M. Forster‘s novel Howards End and the premiere featured a cast that included Vanessa Redgrave, John Benjamin Hickey, and Paul Hilton as Forster himself. The Evening Standard declared the play “a work of rare grace, truth, and beauty.” The play premiered on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on September 27, 2019 and won the Tony for Best New Play …. unprecedentedly making this the 9th major award that it won.
Now this ‘poetic American epic’ is having its US regional theater with a sparkling new production directed by Tom Story at the Round House Theatre in Bethesda MD. It’s a rare opportunity to see this major piee of theater that is a must see for all queer men : beg, steal or borrow to get a ticket and make tracks for Maryland NOW
