The Turbine Theatre, one of London’s newest independent theaters, set up stage at the iconic Battersea Power Station as part of its regeneration. That’s just one of the reasons Queerguru loves it, and another is that the diverse programming always includes some great queer content And as they start to re-open the doors after a very lengthy lockdown, the programmers are intent on putting much-needed smiles back on our (gay) faces
As part of the New Musical Festival, they will be producing PROUD created by Lee Freeman, Graham Lappin, and Mark Anderson.
David has always been different. He really wishes he wasn’t. Despite the acceptance and unconditional love of his parents, his prayers are answered when he discovers the existence of ‘Reality Trek’, a conversion camp for gay men run by ex-gay Donald and his lord-abiding wife, Bernice. With faith on their side, they guide David and his camp campmates through the program, but when the illegally-handsome Rory arrives late, David faces the ultimate test on the path to the straight and narrow.

Then from 17th June – 3rd July 2021 is Rob Madge’s delightful comedy My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?’) It is a celebration of the joy and the chaos of raising a queer kid. When Rob was 12, they attempted to stage a full-blown Disney parade in their house for their Grandma. As Rob donned a wig and played Mary Poppins, Ariel, Mickey Mouse, and Belle, their Dad doubled as Stage Manager, Sound Technician and Goofy. Unfortunately, Dad missed all his cues and pushed all the floats in the wrong direction. Mum mistook Aladdin for Ursula. The costumes went awry. Ariel’s bubble gun didn’t even work properly. Grandma had a nice time though. Rob delves into the archives of their old home videos in an attempt to recreate this parade and celebrate the joy that can be discovered when parents champion the creativity and absurdity of their child. |
