LEGENDARY LOOKS: The Art of Effects : Design in House Ballroom

Delve into the extraordinary tradition and artistry of effects design in the Black and Latine/x LGBTQ+ House Ballroom Community. This landmark multi-media exhibition features 17 unforgettable looks created by some of ballroom’s top designers, stylists, and walkers, including Icon Overall Mother DeeDee Lanvin, Icon Founding Mother Miss Shalae Basquiat, Legendary Cameo Cameo, Legendary Giovanni, and DMV Father Drake Garçon. Exhibited costumes are accompanied by illustrations, video, and dozens of photographs that highlight the creative process and inspiration behind each ballroom moment.

The exhibition is curated by Icon International Mother Twiggy Pucci Garçon, Legendary NYC Mother Jonovia Chase Lanvin, and Icon Ballroom Hall of Famer Founder Michael Roberson Maison-Margiela. Exhibition text is written by Fatima Jamal and Mikelle Street.

 

 

The Arts of Effects Design in House Ballroom is one of a three-part exhibition series, co-organized by ArtsWestchester, City Lore and Pioneer Works, which focuses on the cultural legacy of House Ballroom. .

  • Legendary Looks: My Ballroom Story (June 6-August 10 at Pioneer Works) Featuring a multimedia installation by Felix Rodriguez, a filmmaker who has documented the ballroom scene since 1991.
  • Legendary Looks: Preserving Our Legacy (July 25-Sept 4 at City Lore) Featuring a multimedia exhibition that includes ball flyers, archival photos, costuming, as well as audio excerpts from oral history interviews collected by the curators.
