If you are a regular reader of QUEERGURU you will probably remember that one of our all-time favorite queer indie filmmakers is Joseph Wilson. This very creative soul in London’s East End is a queer artist, activist and drag performer whose work explores LGBTQ+ narratives. He takes inspiration from his own lived experiences as well as documenting the people and places around him, amplifying their voices and celebrating their stories through his art. Seeing his work always makes me homesick for the eclectic edgy queer community that I forsook to emigrate to live in the sun.
Now next month New Art Projects in London are presenting a solo exhibition by Joseph titled FRAGMENTS BETWEEN US. It will include three of his films that are focused on communal experiences of growing up queer through Britain in the late 90s and early 2000s. Themes of trauma, neglect, and courage are prevalent and dare emulated through live performance, installation, and lip-syncing. These include IL-Widna. (2019) a short film that responds to Margaret Thatcher’s homophobic Section 28 legislation and Isn’t It a Beautiful World (2021) a film that explores LGBTQIA+ adolescents and our emotional journey to adulthood.
This exhibition sees Joseph develop his practice from Artist Moving Image to Installation and welcomes audiences to immerse themselves physically into his artistic vision for the first time. He collaborates with internationally renowned set designer Tony Hornecker (The Pale Blue Door) to rebuild the metaphorical worlds in which the films take place as well as choreographer and movement director Chester Hayes, for a special opening night performance

P.S. Joseph has fans everywhere and when he recently signed up with the broadcasting and media production company PRETTYBIRD UK, co-founder and executive producer Juliette Larthe commented: “I have known Joseph Wilsons work for well over a year, following his progress keenly, each film I have seen has had such a progression in terms of narrative and beauty that I just couldn’t wait another minute to showcase him. Joseph has unending amounts of empathy and talent to communicate his artistry and vision, and I feel his passion in every frame. Plus an irreverent, satirical style that captures me and I feel will stand the test of time. Joseph is already a superstar to me, and an important filmmaker in our community as his recent awards have shown, and I can’t wait to see what our collaborations and strategy will bring. Joseph Wilson is so clearly talented with the right ambition, so it’s a delight to have Joseph on our roster.”
