Its been 27 years since the first (and last) DUBLIN DYKE MARCH …. but they are BACK

\There’s a break of some 27 years between the first ever Dublin Dyke March and the second one that took place this past Saturday,  Alice Linehan, one of the organisers and Editor of GCN,  addressed the crowd to thank participants. “The community came out in force for the return of the Dublin Dyke March! To take back the streets for an evening and fill them with love, joy, and dyke power was incredibly inspiring and energising beyond word

The march may not have drawn the hundreds of thousands as at the banned Budapest Pride Parade also happening on the same day but the 1000+ participants kicked on the event marching down O’Connell Street chanting and carrying signs that read “Dykes for trans rights” and “Free Palestine”.

Linehan told QUEERGURU that the event’s theme SPACE encompasses not only the historical context of such events as a way for the community to demand visibility, but it also refers to several pressing issues today.

There is a lack of space for dykes in Dublin and across the country, whether that’s accommodation or social spaces. There is a lack of permanent dyke venues in Ireland, plus concern over policing of space: trans and non-binary people around the world are being increasingly targeted by hate-fueled campaigns, with efforts to exclude and erase the community escalating this year.  Finally, its about the invasion of space with particular reference to the ongoing genocide in Gaza that has caused over 55,000 deaths since October 2023.
