One of the very definite highlights of Art Basel 2015, the world’s leading contemporary Art Fair held in Miami Beach every December, is a new work by the British queer artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien. Commissioned by Rolls Royce Motor Cars the piece is titled Stones Against Diamonds and draws inspiration from a letter written by Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi, where she praises the beauty of natural elements over preferred precious stones.
Julien’s stunning video installation was filmed in the remote Vatnajökull region of South East Iceland, and using the breathtaking scenery of glistening ice caves as a set for the film, he portrays some of the most beautiful objects as the least precious in a conventional sense.
