The world has just lost one of its brightest Broadway stars with the death of Chita Rivera aged 91. Chita …… real name Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero Anderson….. received numerous accolades including two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, and a Drama League Award. She was also the first Latina and the first Latino American to receive a Kennedy Center Honor in 2002, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. She won the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2018.
Her passing has resulted in some glorious and heartfelt obits and remembrances, and this 10-time nominated Tony actress will always be Anita in West Side Story and Velma in Chicago but Queerguru also has a much more irreverent memory. In the 1980s. Forbidden Broadway was a hot-ticket Off-Broadway revue parodying musical theatre, which was so successful it opened in London. They included this song featured below, and always puts a big smile on our faces.
RIP Chita Rivera and thank you for sharing all your talents with us all for so long
