Irish You Tuber Riyadh Khalaf shot to fame when two of his videos, “Mom Reads Son’s Grindr Messages” and “Gay Guy Calls Westboro Baptist Church,” went viral in the span of two weeks. He is also one of Ireland’s leading activists for LGBT rights, and this year he has been hosting a few documentaries to mark the 50th Anniversary of the partial decriminalization of homosexuality in the UK.
This new film I Am …. tells the incredible stories of four elderly gay men who lived through the times prior to 1967 and grew up being illegally gay when thousands of men were prosecuted for consensual homosexual acts. They talk about their double lives, heartbreaks, being arrested, coming out, losing friends to suicide and what they would say to their younger selves.
This look back at this dark part of our community’s history makes for compelling viewing, as we all owe them our gratitude for paving the way through some very bleak times that eventually led to change
