All eyes were on the GOLDEN GLOBES this season now that is no longer under the very secretive (and racist) control of the small membership of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Now owned by Dick Clark Productions (think New Year in NY) its list of nominations was the most queer-inclusive which seemed to be good to be true. And it was.
With 4 out of the 6 nominees for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama playing LGBTQ characters was such an indication that we had every reason to be hopeful. But the award was picked up by Irish Actor Cillian Murphy for his role, in Oppenheimer (Murphy was last nominated for a Golden Globe for playing a trans woman in Breakfast on Pluto )
Last year bisexual White Lotus creator Mike White was the lone out winner and at least we improved this year’s with three ‘out’ queer Globe Winners The first being Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone, who won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture in the Drama category. Their win was doubly significant, as it marked the first time in the show’s history that an indigenous person has won a Golden Globe.
Meanwhile, singer Billie Eilish, who recently opened up about her attraction to women, won the award for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture What Was I Made For?” from Barbie.
FX’s The Bear also had a strong showing. wiming won the Globe for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Jeremy Allen White (The Hottie De Jour) won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. White’s co-star Ayo Edebiri, who identifies as queer, also took home the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
