Gilbert & George : New Normal Pictures Exhibit

A new GILBERT & GEORGE Exhibit is always a reason for celebration. These two queer artists have worked together as a collaborative art duo for over 50 years winning every major prestigious art prize ……like the Tate’s Turner Award.  More importantly, their distinctive and highly formal appearance and manner in performance art, and also their brightly colored graphic-style photo-based artwork have made them the UK’s most celebrated artists today.

This new show at London’s White Cube Gallery is surprisingly titled Gilbert & George NEW NORMAL PICTURES.  Normal is not a word we ever would have associated with them.  But the catalog says The NEW NORMAL PICTURES suggest that the old punk adage ‘the day the world turned Day-Glo’ has come to life. Everywhere is dark yet too bright, tonal contrasts go to war with one another. In streets, alleys and vistas, the unreal city seems to rearrange time and tenses, accelerating the slow and stalling the immediate. The overlooked and thrown away reacquires visibility and meaning. The usual hierarchies reverse; discard dominates.

Gilbert and George’s approach to art has always been anti-elitist. Adopting the slogan ‘Art for All’, they aimed to be relevant beyond the narrow confines of the art world. Although they work in a variety of media, they have always referred to all of their works as “sculpture” One of their first notable pieces was a photographic self-portrait wearing their trademark suits. George the Cunt and Gilbert the Shit was so titled in order to pre-empt criticism.
