The last time Queerguru came across queer artist Georg Meyer-Weil was in Ptown this summer. This London-based German made his debut at The Gallery @ The Crown & Anchor with his sole show AIRMILES. It was a brand new body of works on paper, exploring the male figure. Starting with a series of portraits on vintage airmail letters, the exhibition explores multiple facets of masculinity through a rich variety of media. (see our review HERE)
Weill’s next point of call was Fire Island. During his Art Residency at Andrew Geller’s ‘Frank House’ in Fire Island, Georg worked on a series of drawings and paintings on paper that depict men in pools and in the natural environment. Inspired by Wakefield Poole‘s landmark film ‘Boys In The Sand’ (1971) and Tom Bianchi’s ‘Fire Island Pines: Polaroids, 1975-1983’ he has recreated with life models a number of iconic images. These have been exhibited in the very location where parts of ‘Boys In The Sand’ were originally created: the ‘Frank House’.
Now he is back ‘home’ the very prolific Weill has just opened a new solo show at Espacio Gallery in London. His work portrays humanity through his photography. Georg has spent 30 years documenting his travels and encounters, recording stages of his life with his camera. The exhibition consists of photographs taken over the past two decades, shot in over twenty countries.
He told Queerguru “Turning 50 this year, I decided to look back on my life and share some of its stories. EDEN is a travelogue of encounters I had and worlds I was privileged to experience.“
