Two giant music icons are being celebrated on the big screen in Cannes this week. The first is a stunning documentary on DAVID BOWIE from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen (who also made Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck)
For the feature-length film MOONAGE DAYDREAM on Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey, Morgen was given unfettered access to Bowie’s archival footage by hieS Estate, which in itself is a first. As such its Bowie’s own narration we hear on the film
Talking In Cannes before tonight’s World Premiere. “Bowie cannot be defined, he can be experienced,” Morgen said “That is why we crafted ‘Moonage Daydream,’ to be a unique cinematic experience.” He also said he had spent two years “scrolling through every piece of material in the Bowie archive” to craft the film.
After spending five years in production, “Moonage Daydream” will examine not only the life but also the creative wizardry of Bowie, who worked across several disciplines — most notably music and film — but also explored art forms throughout his life including dance, painting, sculpture, video and audio collage, screenwriting, acting and live theatre.
Here’s an exclusive trailer but you will need to be patient to see the whole film. Neon the distributor says the film is expected to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in the spring of 2023.
PS. The second music icon is ELVIS who is the subject of a new biopic by Baz Luhrmann…… but more of that later
