Queerguru wants to add to the avalanche of outpouring of love and condolences on the passing of the multi-award-winning actress, writer, and comedian Catherine O’Hara. This talented Canadian/American, who died this week, aged 71, after a short illness, had a remarkable, prolific body of work which started with the sketch comedy series Second City Television (1976–1984) for which she won her first of many Emmy Awards. She gained acclaim acting in films such as After Hours (1985) Heartburn (1986), Beetlejuice (1988), Home Alone (1990), and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), and many more
To us, though, we loved her best as one of the regular cast members of Christopher Guest’s hilariously funny parody comedy films such as Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind For Your Consideration .and our all-time favorite Best in Show. 10 years later, O’Hara gained a career resurgence for her role as Moira Rose in the CBC sitcom Schitt’s Creek (2015–2020), earning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy. and equally as important, single-handedly won the hearts of every gay man we know. We all wanted her to be our mother, too
She once said “I’m drawn to playing characters who are terribly flawed and who have no idea about it‘”
The world will be a sadder place without her
