Did Jonathan Bailey really need to wear a prosthetic ‘limb’ for the queer TV drama FELLOW TRAVELERSor could he have gone just ‘au naturel’?

OK so its confession time.  We cannot find one member of the Queerguru Team that does nt have an unrequited major crush on openly gay Brit actor JONATHAN BAILEY.  He’s actually been acting since he was 8 years old  (he’s now the grand old age of 36 ), but to be completely honest it wasn’t until 2019 that we noticed him.  He originated the gender-swapped role of Jamie which was initially written as a female character named Amy in Sondheim’s COMPANY in London’s West End  and won him the 2019 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role .

Strangely enough  it was during the Covid pandemic that his star started to shine so very bright around the globe. Since 2020 he has  starred in Netflix  series Bridgerton, an adaptation of Julia Quinn‘s  Regency romance novels, as Anthony, Viscount Bridgerton. His portrayal was critically acclaimed, and gained him international recognition. The second series, which centered around his character, became the most watched English-language television series on Netflix at the time with 656.16 million hours viewed in its first 28 days of release. and debuted number one in 92 countries on the platform on 25 March 2022.  I think Queerguru  contributed to many of those viewing hours. !!

Three years later In 2023 and Bailey starred opposite Matt Bomer in the Showtimeadaptation of Fellow Travelers.  which centers on the decades-long romance between two men who first meet during the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s. For his performance, Bailey won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries and earned a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

It also other attracted a great deal of attention for the perfect prosthetic penis he wore for his Fellow Travelers character.  Seth Myers couldn’t resist bringing the subject up when Bailey was a guest on his Late Night with Seth Meyers TV Show. “Did you have a hand in the decision-making?”  Meyers asked. A laughing Bailey replied, “Um, just one hand.

Meyers then revealed a completely censored photo of, assumedly, blurred-out prosthetic penises that was taken on one of Bailey’s first days on set. “They’ve all got their different personalities,” Bailey said of the props. “When you’re approaching character you think emotionally, cerebrally, and then you have to really make a big choice.”

Whilst Fellow Travelers is still streaming on Showtime/Paramount Plus Bailey will soon be back on the screen in the movie version of Wicked.  He’ll be appearing au natural
