If Brit actor Declan Bennett is still fresh in your memory from his recent role-playing a Policeman’s (rather hot) boyfriend in the groundbreaking TV crime drama The Long Call, then you should have seized the chance to see him in the flesh so to speak. Bennet is also a successful singer/songwriter and a playwright as well as an actor and he has been performing in his own one-man play at London’s Turbine Theatre.
Boy Out The City is an autobiographical piece about how he escaped London in the Fall of 2020 as his way of dealing with the Covid lockdown. He chose a beautiful, idyllic countryside village in Oxfordshire where he knew no one and the plan was to sit it out with his boyfriend. That didn’t last too long as the BF got a job in Atlanta within the first weeks leaving Bennett on his own.
He started getting up at 5 am and spending the whole day just writing and writing what at first was a monologue out of which Boy Out The City was born.
The play extends beyond Bennett’s self=imposed Covid 19 isolation and he shows hi finely tuned sense of humor with stories growing up with a Catholic mother and hiding his sexuality from schoolmates; life in London, where he experiences hedonistic liberation until an act of God gets in the way.
The self-deprecating and talented Bennett shows he is so much more than just a pretty face, and I think there will probably be a very long line of men wanting to share his country solitude from now on.
