So how did David Hockney, one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century, while away his time during the Covod lockdown? Well. he decamped to his house in Normandy, and he took the opportunity to watch and record the changing seasons on his iPad. The stunning result is 200 pictures stitched together into one continuous frieze that, at 314 feet long, is his biggest work to date
Titled “A Year In Normandie’ it has been on a global Tour and is now about to be on exhibit at the Museum Wurth in Kunzelsau, Germany
The location of Normandy, where the artist has lived since 2019, also brought to mind the Bayeux Tapestry, with its dramatic scenes of the Norman Conquest. Hockney said that he hopes “the viewer… will walk past [his work] like the Bayeux Tapestry, and I hope they will experience in one picture the year in Normandy.”
P.S, Many of us remember Hockney’s early work back in the 1960s when he played a major part in the pop movement. And it’s always a joy to revisit A BIGGER SPLASH about Hockney and his work after his breakup with Peter Schlesinger. It is still available on Netflix
