Could the GOLDEN GLOBES get any GAYER? Check out all the queer nominations

Hollywood loves to hand out awards to itself and line up for the seemingly hundreds of different Critic Awards.  The season officially kicks with the highly controversial GOLDEN GLOBES that are back again after being forced to take an hiatus. They are in the gift of Hollywood Foreign Press Association who first started having problems back in 1996 when the Washington Post alleged that the majority of HFPA members were not full-time professional journalists, but rather part-time freelance writers for smaller publications as well as non-journalists, ranging from a college professor to an appliance salesman

In 2021 an LA Times investigation found that the HFPA regularly paid aome of its 85 members over $1 million annually for serving on various committees. It gave so much power to these members  which the investigation  noted that the association’s small membership made it easier to sway. Plus the investigation alleged that many of HFPA members are not journalists, and that established foreign journalists who apply are regularly rejected. However what was probably the worst aspect of the report  was that they had no Black members, and they went on to add that some  voters were also accused of making sexist and racist remarks and soliciting favors from celebrities and movie studios.

So for the very first time NBC actually dropped the broadcast of the Golden Globes in 2022, only to bring it back the following year after the HFPA implemented reforms including an updated code of conduct, bylaws, a ban on gifts and new rules on travel.  In 2023, the Golden Globes were acquired by Dick Clark Productions, and problematic voters were expelled, and the membership expanded from about 85 to 300 — including a 10% Black representation.  Several wary insiders have been quoted as saying this is progress but ask if this enough.

However Queerguru loves to focus on the positive and in our book that is to celebrate  how gay the Golden Globes are this year.  Below we have indicated all openly LGBTQ+ nominees with a 🌈 and films/series with specific LGBTQ+ themes or prominent queer characters with a 🍭.
