Congratulations to ECUADOR who became the 5th South American Country to legalise same-sex marriage joining in with Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay and Argentina

Despite the objections of The Catholic Church which is highly influential in Ecuador, the constitutional Court in Quito ruled in favour of allowing two gay couples to marry. The judges made their ruling in a closed hearing, in which four judges dissented but five approved the couples’ right to marry.

At the same time in Africa, Botswana’s High Court  overturned a colonial-era law criminalizing consensual same-sex relations in a landmark victory for Africa’s LGBTQ movements.  Coming just a month after Kenya’s high court upheld its laws criminalizing homosexuality, this is a major breakthrough for the Continent

The case was brought to court in March by Letsweletse Motshidiemang, a 21-year-old student at the University of Botswana, who argued that society had changed and that homosexuality was more widely accepted, local media reported.
