Club Jewel Box for one raunchy night of queer poetry, performance and film

Pink Narcissus

CLUB JEWEL BOX is a one-night installation presented by Flaming Classics and celebrating queer poetry, performance and avant-garde cinema on Friday 13th April. Named after one of Miami’s first queer clubs, this ephemeral space celebrates Miami’s queer past, present, and future. Guests are invited to cruise the space, taking in six films that are paired with visual and aural performances. The night explores desire, anticipation, and eroticism.

There are 6 selected films | BLOW JOB (Andy Warhol, 1963) | CHRISTMAS ON EARTH (Barbara Rubin, 1963) | FIREWORKS (Kenneth Anger, 1947) | LOOKING FOR LANGSTON (Isaac Julien, 1989) | MANO DESTRA (Cleo Übelmann 1986) |PINK NARCISSUS (James Bidgood, 1971)

The films will be punctuated with poetry curated by Claire Grossman and read by local poets from Miami.  The films will also feature performance components from local performers including King Femme, Ded Cooter, Kunst, and Jupiter Velvet among others.

Jupiter Velvet

Its just $5 to get in, but you have to be over 18 years old  as its all kind of raunchy, and if you even older than that there will be libations provided by Concrete Brewery and Tito’s Homemade Vodka for 21+

P.S. The night is named after one of Miami’s earliest queer clubs – Club Jewel Box – operated by Danny Brown and Doc Benner from 1945-1950.  They also ran the highly successful and nationally touring Jewel Box Revue featuring drag queens and kings in a nightclub show. Hosted at The Jewel Box at the National Young Arts Campus, the night is a reclamation of queer spaces that have disappeared in Miami.
