It doesn’t seem that long ago (!) when there wasn’t a single out-gay actor in Hollywood, even though the studios were always rife with so many rumors.  Being homosexual was deemed a career death sentence.  In fact, in the 1930s’ one brave openly gay actor, William Haines, had his career cut short due to his refusal to deny his homosexuality. Haines’s openness clashed with the introduction of the Production Code, which partnered with the Catholic Legion of Decency and sought to instill a distinctly straight, white, Christian, middle-class set of values in Hollywood.

Interestingly enough, its nigh on impossible to discover when Hollywood changed its ways, or who in fact were the first openly queer actors in film or TV.  But it’s great that progress was finally made ….. too late for the Cary Grant’s of the world …..but perfect for gay men not only able to have successful careers but to be partnered as well
