Lilly Wachowski is one half of the Wachowskis a pair of American film and television directors, writers and producers who made their directing debut with Bound (1996) and achieved fame with The Matrix, franchise. Both Lilly and her sister Lana are trans women.
Lilly’s latest project is Cassie Workman is Witchy AF, starring the Australian transgender comedian Cassie Workman, and is a new YouTube series that she has executive produced. Wachowski had recently opined about the difficulties of getting her trans Weather Underground script produced because of its “wall-to-wall trans cast,” but managed to successfully get this ‘black magic story’ both made and screened on YouTube
The eight-part comedy documentary series takes viewers through the occult’s history, mythology, and impact on culture at large. Set in a fictional occult bookstore that’s loaded with puppets, the series dives deep on everything occult, from Aleister Crowley to tarot cards. With the help of guest stars, including Garbage’s Shirley Manson, and a demon raven named King Grimskwawk to whom Workman may or may not have sold her soul, Workman guides viewers through the absurd underworld with a drink firmly in hand.
A joint production with ETCH, Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF is the first from Wachowski’s production company, Anarchists United Studios, which “focuses on elevated genre projects created by artists from underrepresented communities.” We imagine transgender immigrant TV show hosts “created in a lab specifically to make Ron DeSantis angry” fall under that category.
| Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF will premiere on YouTube on September 16, with new episodes airing weekly. |
