There in the detail of the announcement of the 26th Edition of the Provincetown Film Festival  (five days of unflinching cinema!) is the news that will make this even more unmissable than usual. Its the news that this years Filmmaker on the Edge Award is to be given to Andrew Haigh, probably the best Brit queer filmmaker of his generation.

Haigh will be screening  his latest movie “All of Us Strangers” a 2023 romantic fantasy starring Andrew Scott and and Paul Mescal  which Queerguru’s Ris Fatah raved about on our review. It has also enjoyed such critical success on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 96% of 257 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.8/10.   Unfairly ignored by both the British and American Academy Awards  who still show, even in these days, that they will ignore queer movies, even ones as good as this. Thank goodness for the British Independent Film Awards who handed out 8 statues to this exceptional film .  And of course the GALECA. (The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics ).… which Queerguru belongs to … gave it TWO Best Film Awards)

This is Haigh’s  5th feature film and we have been in his corner from the very beginning  …… although we will admit his debut feature GREEK PETE about a London call boy  ….. may not have been is finest cinematic moment.  However seemingly like the rest of the world, we absolutely adored Haigh’s second feature.  It was the  highly acclaimed romantic drama Weekend about a 48-hour relationship between two men (played by Tom Cullen and Chris New),  which premiered on 11 March 2011 at the SXSW Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Emerging Visions.

Haigh will personally be in Provincetown to pick up his Award (where we are proud to contiune to  be Media Sponsors) and where we hope he will also sit down and talk with Queerguru.   It has also been announced this week that he has been tapped by Universal Pictures to write and direct a biopic of the life of Leonardo da Vinci.  It will the 5th film on the artist BUT the first one which will include his homosexuality .  We can’t wait.
