It seems like loyalty only goes one way these days. Take U-Haul, for example. Always the punch line for the classic queer joke “What does a lesbian bring on a second date? A U-Haul.”  We assumed that was based on the fact they were good customers of the trucking company. Well, that’s not a fact appreciated by billionaire U-Haul fortune heir Stuart Shoen, who is trying his best to get a  Leather Bar closed down in Phoenix, Arizona

It all started when nightlife promoter Matthew Moody, who used to DJ at Barracks, a leather bar in Palm Springs, and when that was about to close, he decided to open his own version of the bar in  Phoenix’s up-and-coming gayborhood in the Melrose district.  With a thriving queer community, the idea seemed a no-brainer, but he hadn’t accounted for Shoen, who just bought the next-door property to store part of his car collection.  Before Moody could strap himself into his chaps, Shoen decided to oppose Moody’s application for a liquor license.  And the billionaire could afford to finance a king-sized downtown battle in court with months of hearings, legal filings, subpoenas, and delays, leaving the Barracks project in limbo.

Shoen tried to avoid accusations of being a homophobe by having his attorney reveal that the Palm Springs bar had closed after a sting operation revealed it was often operating as an unlicensed sex club. Plus, Moody originally partnered with the Palm Springs owner, Richard “Scott” Murchison, to buy the Barracks’ new location in Phoenix.

“He had no problem buying next to a bar,” Moody said about Shoen “He only had an issue when he found out it was going to be a gay leather bar.

Then on July 10, Shoen lost when the Arizona State Liquor Board granted Moody’s license, with one condition: He has 90 days to completely remove Murchison from his bar’s ownership structure. And get those leathers shining
