Bebe is Back and ready to tell her story

Bebe Zahar Benet aka Marshall Kudi Ngwa was the very first winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race back in 2009, and one of the most larger-than-life queens to ever compete and is now back on television, in competition on RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars (Season 3) on VH1.

What Bebe has been up too since winning, and even before that, is the subject of a new film called BEING BEBE: the BeBe Zahara Benet Documentary. It will feature Marshall, originally from Cameroon in West Africa, from his early days as a promising amateur drag performer in Minneapolis, until as Bebe being crowned by RuPaul.  It covers his move to New York after his win to more than 5 years later struggling to make ends meet.  Now he is bouncing back as the very first previous winner who has ever before been invited to compete in Allstars.

When asked why she was making this film, director Emily Branham said “Yes, I’m a straight white woman from Minnesota, but this film is personal. I was a child actor, and have always been fascinated by how and why we all perform in everyday life, both in onstage and offstage situations. But more recently, I’ve realized that what really binds me to BeBe’s story is the theme of perseverance – throughout highs and lows, victories and disappointments, Marshall never gives up on his unconventional dreams. And neither do I.”

This much eagerly awaited documentary has been filmed but to enable to get it through post-production and ready to screen, the producers have launched a Kickstarter Campaign which has already reached half of its target of $33K.  They have 18 days left to reach the balance in this all or nothing campaign, so every single dollar helps
