queerguru’s Parisian correspondent has just sent us news about a stunning biopic that is the latest sensation in movie theaters over there. Barbara is the story of the late famous chanteuse whose songs included “L’Aigle noir” which sold 1 million copies in just 12 hours in the 1960’s.
She cut a very dramatic figure, a tall person, always dressed in black as she sang melancholy songs of lost love. However it was just her performances in Paris Music Halls and Theaters that started in the 1950’s that made her such a iconic diva in the LGBT community, but also her tireless work as an leading activist in the fight against AIDS. For that, she was given the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest award.
The new movie that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year is directed by actor Mathieu Amalric and has a tour-de-force performance by Jeanne Balibar in the title role.
In her lifetime Barbara’s fame was mainly restricted to France, but once this movie finally makes the US shores, then finally she will get the acclaim that she so deserves. P.S. Watch this space as we will update the moment the US premiere release is announced.
