This week we want to wish BALLETBOYZ a very Happy 25th Anniversary. They will be celebrating at their home-from-home, Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, with their brand-new production Still Pointless.
The company was created when Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt met as students at the Royal Ballet School. During this time, a shared interest in photography and film found them creating a documentary for Channel 4, titled BalletBoyz. The four-part series revealed their lives as “ordinary” ballet dancers. The rest they say is history, and very quickly, BB established itself as one of the most original and innovative forces in modern dance, known with a reputation for excellence in performance on stage and on screen: revolutionising programming formats, commissioning work and collaborating with cutting-edge talent. Winning numerous awards and nominations along the way, including an Olivier Award, National Dance Awards, an International Emmy and The Golden Prague and Rose d’Or Awards twice. Equally over the years they have won over the hearts and minds of audiences over the globe.
With 25 years of commissioning, producing, and performing dance, BalletBoyz has consistently pushed the boundaries of how dance is presented by artists and enjoyed by audiences. Incorporating live dance and film, the evening will feature excerpts of work from the Company’s history including choreographers Christopher Wheeldon, Iván Perez, Maxine Doyle, Liam Scarlett, Xie Xin, and Javier de Frutos, and composers Cassie Kinoshi, Ben Foskett, Keaton Henson, and Max Richter.
In ‘Pointless; 10 world-class dancers will take audiences through a journey of some of BalletBoyz’ best moments. In a nod to the past, the show’s opening section sees BalletBoyz founders Michael Nunn OBE and William Trevitt OBE returning to the stage to perform an excerpt from Russell Maliphant’s seminal work Critical Mass*, which was the catalyst for their first show, Pointless, at the Roundhouse in 2001.
