Although QUEERGURU has been spending summers in Provincetown the gay mecca at the tip of Cape Cod for over 20 years, we only met one of its best known residents earlier this year. Ron Amato is a Professor in the Photography and Related Media department of Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and has lived here for some time now. Amato fell in love with not just with the men (well, that happens to us all), but also both the sheer beauty of the windswept beaches and the fact that the Town is also home to the country’s oldest art colony.
This year the PAAM (Provincetown Art Association Museum) presented his latest solo show ARTISTS OF PROVINCETOWN which highlighted artists with deep ties to Provincetown during the early 21st century. This exhibition was made over a period of eight years, and Amato created eighty-four deeply penetrating portraits which illustrate the breadth and depth of the community. Making use of the color and light which is uniquely Provincetown, Amato’s imagery is both dynamic and authentic and he sat down to talk about it with QUEERGURU (see HERE)
Amato’s seminal exhibition of intimate self-portraits in NYC in 2000, established him as a leading Queer artist and he is now a regular contributor to numerous publications with images representing queerness and male sexuality. The really good news is that his latest project is AMATO magazine : 67 photographs of 8 beautiful men which he shot in Provincetown this summer (where there is never a shortage of such candidates) which you will not want to put down.
Here’s a quick preview of AMATO which like me, if Santa doesn’t bring it, you could pretend to buy it as a Christmas Gift knowing full well that you will never part with it.
