The latest one to hit the headlines on their way out is Silas H. Shelton, a pastor from Wilmington, Ohio, and former leader of Blanchester Community Ministries/Blanchester Community Church. The Rev Shelton had gained local and national attention in recent years for his outspoken opposition to LGBTQ+ visibility in schools and libraries. Church Leaders recall that he became a contentious figure in 2023 after addressing a school board meeting in his local district to condemn the Heartstopper graphic novel series and other LGBTQ-inclusive titles offered at a Scholastic Book Fair.
At that 2023 meeting, Shelton complained that he “got sick” reading Heartstopper, which features a queer teen romance, and warned about what he described as “health risks of being gay,” rhetoric that LGBTQ+ advocates identify as stigmatizing and inaccurate. He also called Pride flags in schools “disgusting” and urged the removal of books such as Heartstopper after his 12‑year‑old daughter saw the title at a school event.
Now this fine, outstanding Christian minister has pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges relating to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The plea comes after prosecutors originally filed a dozen charges, including rape and gross sexual imposition, in connection with the sexual abuse of a teenage girl under his pastoral care. Shelton pleaded guilty to three third‑degree felony counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in an Ohio court on Monday, 20 April 2026, just before a five‑day trial was due to begin. Local outlet WKRC/Local 12 similarly notes that the 49‑year‑old pastor entered guilty pleas to unlawful sexual conduct charges and to menacing by stalking, with other counts dismissed in the deal.
But wait, it get worse. According to Local 12 and Church Leaders, the plea agreement resulted in the dismissal of several of the most serious allegations, including rape, gross sexual imposition, and arson charges that had been added in connection with a separate 2025 incident. Church Leaders note that he initially faced 12 charges before entering into the plea arrangement that narrowed the case to four counts, including unlawful sexual conduct and related offences. Under the terms of his plea, Shelton now faces between three and 15 years in prison and will have to register in person as a Tier II sex offender for 25 years. Local 12 reports that he is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date, with the court yet to determine the length of his incarceration within the statutory range
For LGBTQ+ communities, the case has resonance because Shelton’s anti-LGBTQ+ activism explicitly targeted queer-inclusive media and Pride symbols under the language of “protecting children,” even as he now admits to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
