Harry Leighton’s queer BDSM drama PILLION may have been a smash hit with LGBTQ+ audiences everywhere; however, it’s been all but ignored by the major Awards this season. Shut out at the Academy Awards and then failed to collect any of its three BAFTA Nominations for the main players, but one cast member has been rightly applauded. Maggie, the Rottweiler who plays the role of Alexander Skarsgard’s character’s dog, Rosie, won the Palm Dog – Mutt Moment award at the Cannes Film Festival.
If that is not enough, this past weekend at the 20th Anniversary of The FIDOS, or For Incredible Dogs On Screen Award, she was a winner again. The Awards honor dogs’ performances and acknowledge their skills in movies (live or animated)
Every year, The Fidos collar winners in a range of quirky categories. The top prize is “Best in World” (since 2007) for the year’s standout dog performance. Other collars recognize genre stars – Blockbuster Bowser for action heroes and Comedy Canine for funny hounds – and they even added “Dog Dox” in 2021 for the best dog-centric documentary. Whether it’s an Oscar-winning role (hello, Uggie from The Artist!) or a little mutt stealing a scene, they’ve got a category to celebrate it.
