Whenever Queerguru runs into Alex Guerra the co-owner of The Gaythering, THE hottest queer hotel and bar in Miami Beach it’s impossible not to be immediately moved by his infectious passion for both his work and life. He even ramps it up yet another level this time of year when he is the Curator of ARTGAYSEL and he is in his real element creating the perfect space for queer artists.
The Event is at the same time as the major Art Basel takes over the city but although it shows an overload of art, it never makes space for queer art …….enter Alex and husband Stephan Ginez.
Each year the pair invite artists to participate in what has very quickly become a major destination for both artists and collectors. To keep the mix fresh Guerra always ensues each year that there are always a handful of new artists making their Gaysel debuts. As he spent summer in his new home in PTown this year, he selected 7 local artists to come south to show their work.
They include Chick Bryne who graduated from Dennison University in OHIO and seems not to have looked back ever since. One of his career highlights so far was participating in a group show at Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art (something of a holy mecca for queer art).
