Actually Muriel was not terrible, but an absolute riot and the 1994 Australian movie Muriel’s Wedding launched both Toni Collete and Rachel Griffiths into the world with such a bang, and then became a cult classic that every gay man of a certain age (and Abba fan….often the same) knows word by word.
P.J. Hogan, who wrote and directed the movie is now turning it into a stage musical and he is promising to keep it faithful to the original film, but he will update it a tad. Muriel the heroine “ends up with everything she ever wanted — a man, a fortune and a million Twitter followers. That’s when things start to go really wrong.”
The new production will play Nov. 6 through Dec. 30 at Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre BUT in 2017. queerguru just cannot wait.
