Wish You Were Queer: how LGBTQ+ culture thrives (and survives) in America’s heartland.

To be honest, watching the trailer of OUTtv’s new show WISH YOU WERE QUEER either had me in fits of laughter, or on the brink of tears.  But hey isnt that what queer comedy is about now?

I will confess that the thing that attracted me most was the presence of one of the few drag superstars we do love : Miss Trixie Mattel.  For her alone we would wish we were queer  (if we werent already that is).  She plays the unlikely Fairy Godmother who, best friends comics, Michael Henry and Tim Murray, want to persuade to produce

their stand-up show.  They are going to do this by undertaking a queer road trip across Middle America, meeting locals and diving into queer culture to convince Ms Mattel to be their mentor as they believe she has the potential to change their lives

En-route, this rather worldly pair finds they have to adapt to all the quirky local encounters and heartfelt community conversations that they find themselves in the middle of.  After all, they are not in Kansas anymore
The series was filmed way before we had a change of Administration in the US.  It’s led by a racist, misogynist,  transphobic, and homophobic person who would like nothing more than to spread his hate and desire to bring us to our knees.  As we are still struggling to come out of our sheer numbness, maybe we need to indulge in more comedy such as this.  It will not change the world, but it may provide us with a much-needed distraction and respite
Tim Murray added  “Michael and I have been touring together for years making each other laugh. Every time we’ve been on the road exploring what’s gay in each city we’ve said ‘someone should be filming this’ and now they are!,”
