Even though it would mean forsaking the sun drenched days here in QUEERGURU’s home town of Miami Beach, we would happily swap it this weekend for the snow covered sidewalks of West Houston St in Manhattan, and the Film Forum in particular.
This weekend the movie theatre has a real treat planned with a special screening of a restored vision of WHAT SEX AM I?. The film made in 1985 by Oscar Winner Lee Grant is a wonderful slice of queer history with ist exploration of the trans experience in 1980s America.
When it was originally screened on HBO, the NY TImes gave it an excellent review which ended by saying “We get a sense of anguish. The decision to undergo surgery is painful; the trauma is immense. There are some 6,000 transsexuals in the United States, the documentary says, struggling for sexual identity.”
Following the screening on Saturday 14th December at 3,40 pm there will be a Q & A session with Grant who directed, narrated and reported the film, and drag legend and activist Charles Busch
We wish we were there (but we will have to be content to watch it streaming on VImeo https://vimeo.com/ondemand/whatsexami
