Where are you going, Habibi?

Even though German/Turkish Ibo (Cem Alkanhas graduated with a good degree in business studies he simply cannot land a job.  He still lives at home with his conservative traditional parents and his younger sister in their small apartment in Berlin. He does some part-time work in a sex shop which he keeps a secret from his family, in the same way that he has also not told them he is gay.

As the story starts Ibo’s boyfriend Lars (Anton Korppi-Tommola) is about to return is about to move back to Sweden but he does at least leave behind his special recipe for knottbuller which will end up playing a significant part later on. Meanwhile one day Ibo opens the front door of his apartment to find a handsome rugged blond man on the doorstep. He quickly realizes that the police are also in the apartment building looking for this stranger, so he takes him in until the coast is clear. The incident, or rather the man, sticks in Ibo’s head and when by chance he spots him in the street,  he just follows him to see where his headed.

They end up in a gym where Alexander (Martin Waldewrestles with other quite rough looking men, so the very next day Ibo shows up again at the same gym and asks for free trial. It’s not necessary the sport that he is interested in, but just the chance of some close physical contact with Alexander whom he is already infatuated with.  His chance to do so happens just when the session is over, and  Alexander a professional petty thief is set upon by two seeking revenge for some undisclosed reason. Now laid up in hospital with two broken arms and no visitors besides Ibo in sight and more than willing  to help, an unlikely relationship starts up between this tough straight macho guy and a completely besotted Ibo.

wo-willst-du-hin-habibi (1)In this utterly charming well-paced drama filmmaker Tor Iben covers several different issues from the traditional Turkish take on homosexuality, the inbred racism where non-Germans are shut out of jobs they are qualified for, and the concept of a bromance which is based on love which may or may not manifest itself in the usual physical manner. Alexander is not easy to like, let alone love, and Ibo has just started dating a new very eager and charming boyfriend, but he is no match for Ibo’s passion even if it may prove to be totally unrequited.  It is, as Ibo’s Aunt says shrewdly observing the scenario, you cannot always chooses who you fall in love with.

Iben resolves all the loose ends before the final credits role, maybe a tad too conveniently neatly, but it is one of those dramas that you cannot help but hope that the protagonist gets to catch a break at last.

Great physical chemistry between Alken and Walde always ensures that their smoldering relationship may just explode at any moment and will have audiences at LGBT festivals in particular perched on the edge of their seats until the very end.
