There is a wonderful new Course at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum next month which addresses the whole issue of what is LGBTQ art. It is a question that goes to the nature of art itself as well as LGBTQ identities and cultures. By using key objects in V&A’s rather magnificent collection, the course will explore issues such as the relationship between ‘homosexual’ and ‘homoerotic’, trans and gender identities, and some of the societal taboos that have shaped persecution and criminalization.
Over the six weeks of the course led by Dr. Kevin Childs an Art Historian and lecturer, topics will cover gender identity, love and desire, interior spaces, persecution and the law, and the normalization (or otherwise) of sexual diversity in and through the arts and fashion. Combining lectures, workshops with artists, and guided visits to the museum’s collections, the course will provide a dynamic and exciting introduction to the varied worlds of LGBTQ art.
