The best inspiration for any LGBT drama is drawing on personal experience as in the case of budding filmmaker Matthew Puccini’s second short narrative LAVENDER. It is the tale of Inez an innocent young gay man who’s quite shy when it comes to dating, but that all changes when a hook up on Grindr leads him to Arthur and Lucas, a married couple in their 40’s who are looking to spice up their sex-life.
Introducing a third person into a relationship no matter how casual can be fraught with unexpected issues, but in this what developed was something more intimate and meaningful as Inez became an integral part of the couple’s life. This very positive and non-judgemental take on an unconventional relationship that refuses to comply with what is considered the norm is completely refreshing, even if it cannot avoid the ultimate unraveling.
queerguru originally came across Puccini last year when we discovered his first movie a powerful wee film called The Mess He Made. This is the story of Jude who goes to a walk-in Clinic in a suburban strip Mall to have an HIV test which landed most appropriately on our desk on Worlds Aids Day. It showed a remarkable sensitivity in this compelling tale about a challenging situation that most gay men have had to confront at least in his life.
Puccini is a fresh new voice in queer cinema who is intent on putting his own very inspired spin on scenarios and issues that are so very easy to relate too. It is vital for our community that we support talents like this, and so we are more than happy to endorse his Kickstarter campaign for what is a rather modest amount to get his new movie Lavender completed.
