For several years the highlights of Queerguru’s January were our annual trips to the world-famous Sundance Film Festival. 7 very long days seeing as many as 5 feature films per day and on one cinematic high and even prepared to eat junk fast food on line so we don’t miss a single frame on the screen.
It was very cold up there in snowy Park City and the more popular it got, the more expensive the lodgings got, so its kind of a relief (to my body and my wallet) that because of Covid 19 for the first time in Sundance’s history much of their very extensive program of the very best new moves will now be available to stream online.
We are still wading from the schedule to pick out our movies-not-to-miss BUT meanwhile this one jumped out as a front-leader as our favorite already.
For years, Weirdo Night has been a must-attend live event on the Los Angeles social calendar. Hosted and curated by legendary queer performance artist Dynasty Handbag, the wildly popular underground club night celebrates a range of misfit talents in a raucous variety show that regularly and intentionally goes off the rails.
Shot during the lockdowns that have shuttered performance spaces, this video experience is for no one and everyone, a stand-in for the monthly extravaganzas that assemble weirdos from the comedy world, live bands, dancers and performance artists in a radically non-competitive Star Search for freaks and their friends.
WEIRDO NIGHT (the pilot) is directed by award winning filmmaker Mariah Garnett and features Dynasty Handbag along with Hedia Maron, Smiling Beth, Patti Harrison, Vagabon, Sasami, BiBi Discoteca, Morgan Bassichis, and Sarah Squirm.
