The much-loved and legendary Brit actress Dame PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE, who has just died aged 96 had the unique achievement of having so many different groups of fans that didnt always know about each other.
She was honored by her peers with the 1968 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in Darling of the Day and then in 1988 with the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Candide at the Old ViC
On television, Routledge came to prominence during the 1980s in monologues appearing in Bennett’s A Woman of No Importance (1982), and was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress for Bennett’s Talking Heads: A Lady of Letters (1988). She also starred as Hetty Wainthropp in the British television series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates (1990, 1996–1998), but the great British public fell in love with for her pitch perfect portrayal of the snobby Hyacinth Bucket in the popular BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances (1990–1995), for which she was twice nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Light Entertainment Performance . Then in 2027 she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for her services to entertainment and charity.
However it wasnt her Hyacinth that made Dame Patricia an undisputed gay icon, as that status she gained with her hysterical portrayals of Kitty a TV Agony Aunt that she played on the Victoria Wood TV Show. For some reason unknown to us, these performance that British queers totally adore (and can quote word by word!) didnt travel. So here then is our favorite one (with links to the ohers ) : watching them again (and again) now is the very best way we can think to celebrate the life of this wonderful actress and human being.
Thank you for giving us so much joy Dame Patricia : trust me , we will never ever forget you |
