No matter how good the queer actor/comedian Wanda Sykes is in her acting roles (and she is VERY good) there’s nothing quite like seeing her light up the stage so brilliantly in one of her solo Comedy Specials.
Her latest one NOT NORMAL that she made for Netflix is possibly her very best to date. The fact she actually chose to go with the giant streaming service as she had been very vocal on Twitter supporting MoNique’s claim about the gender disparity in pay that Netflix once practised, Whatever went down, we can at least assume that she now gets the same pay as her male peers.
Sykes brilliantly dissects the inequity and sheer ridiculousness of Trump. He is a very easy target for everyone, but where many of us tend to let our sheer anger turn our views into nothing more than mad rants, Sykes has both the wit and intelligence to articulate her feelings in a manner that makes us laugh more than cry.
She deals with him effectively and deftly so that she can move on to other controversial topics that she can take aim at with her very wicked tongue. Race is high on the list and she imbues this part of the show with her own experiences of having a French wife and being the parent of two white children
One of the very best segments of the Special is when she takes aim at the TV reality show The Bachelor which she mercilessly destroys and which has us rolling up with laughter knowing that we can never ever even think about watching it again.
Sykes, extremely confident in her sexuality, and although we so anxiously to claim her as one of ‘us’, she doesnt let it define her or her act, and we end up loving her even more because of that.
An unmissable hour of excellent television
