Rob Ward’s play Gypsy Queens a rather touching LGBTQ love story between two boxers is currently wowing audiences up and down the U.K. after a successful run in London’s West End last October. It is the story of “Gorgeous George” O’Connell, a bare-knuckle fighter and traveller, who enters the world of professional boxing putting him on a collision course with his roots, his identity and his greatest fear. In the opposite corner, gay boxer Dane “The Pain” Samson, young pretender and son of a boxing legend who’s fighting his own battles leading to a tragedy that neither could predict. These two fighters discover the greatest challenge lies outside the ring.
Gypsy Queens, starring Ward and also Ryan Clayton tells an important story about externalized and internalized homophobia and overcoming both.
