Two new ‘must see’ queer movies are about to be released in the UK. First from Peccadillo PIcs comes the critically acclaimed WILDHOOD from writer/director Bretten Hannam It is a beautiful queer coming of age story set within Canada’s first nation Mi’kmaq people, a community over 14,000 years old, based in rural Nova Scotia. The road movie introduces us to Link, (Phillip Lewitski), a Two-Spirit, half Mi’kmaq teenager, and his younger half-brother Travis (Avery Winters-Anthony). The term Two-Spirit loosely refers to queer first nation people – a more detailed indigenous definition is the intersection of the relationship to land, gender, sexuality, ceremony, and culture.
The film combines beautiful cinematography shot on location in Canada’s striking Nova Scotia landscape with a great complimentary soundtrack. Handsome casting, with mostly indigenous characters in supporting roles, and a strong script make this film very easy to watch. A well-paced plot reflects the slower speed of life in rural communities. The film is about family, discovery, the quest to belong and identity, both in and out of blood family. Highly recommended.

Later in September, select UK Cinemas will be buzzing with Brit writer-director Matt Carter’s debut feature ‘In From The Side”. We got hooked the moment we discovered that the film explores life on and off the pitch at a gay rugby club. And although vivaverve.com the Uk distributor was reluctant to let Queerguru review the film (!) we still think judging by the trailer alone, it has the making of a great queer rom-com.
When Mark (Alexander Lincoln), a new and inexperienced rugby club member, finds himself drawn to Warren (Alexander King), a seasoned first-team player there is simply no turning back despite the alpha masculinity of all the other players.
In cinemas on September 16, 2022
