The first film Queerguru reviewed by the award-winning experimental filmmaker ANTONY HICKLING was Little Gay Boy back in 2013. We mused then that maybe one day he would assume the mantle of the late great Derek Jarman, and the more we see Hickling’s work, the more we think we were right.
This British/French independent filmmaker has lived in Paris for years, and he uses the city as a background for the stories he films. This includes “One Deep Breath,” which he created in 2014. It follows Maul [played by Manuel Blanc], who is struggling with the loss of his partner, who took his own life. In typical Hickling style, we see this confused and grief-stricken over-thinking man merging the reality and fantasy of his relationship. It’s strong on imagery as Hickling uses performance, poetry, and dance., and for the most part it is stunningly beautiful to watch. However, It’s the pain of Maul’s sheer loneliness that hits you the hardest
In our review of Little Gay Boy back in 2013, we wrote that the film was undoubtedly an acquired taste and is for real cineastes and art lovers. There is a market for films like this that push boundaries, and it is not afraid to take chances even at the risk of failing.
