Queerguru fell in love with Trans opera star Lucia Lucas and her beautiful baritone voice when she was the subject of the documentary The Sound of Identity. It followed Lucas as she prepared for her US debut singing the lead Mozart’s Don Giovanni. It was inspired decision by the Tobias Pecker the Artistic Director of Tulsa Opera House, who cast Lucas purely on her talent but he was more than aware of the risks of his controversial choice.
The Film ….. and her performance …. was such a wonderfully uplifting experience, as behind this remarkable voice is a charismatic and passionate person that I jumped at the chance to interview her. https://queerguru.com/lucia-lucas-talks-about-the-sound-of-identity-that-profiles-her-stunning-us-debut-as-don-giovanni/
The success opened the doors for the German-based singer to appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in NY and the English National Opera in London.
In her latest project, an episode of TRANScendent sounds Lucas Spotlights her Baritone a capella performance Of “Demeter” from the Tom W. Green opera ‘The World’s Wife for the GRAMMYS Recording Acadamy/
The opera borrows text from the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy, which tells the stories of forgotten women throughout history. According to the classical music review site Planet Hugill, the composer — who has a background in electronic music and jazz — introduced loop pedals as a riff on the theme of amplifying the voices of unheard women.
In her performance of “Demeter,” Lucas uses these loop pedals in order to amplify her powerful, crystalline baritone, and also to make it self-sufficient. With the use of the pedals, Lucas’ voice serves as melody and accompaniment simultaneously, creating a layered world of sound through her vocals alone, with mesmerizing results.
